The Ploy To Hijack The Choiseul UWP Constituency Chairmanship?

Rufus and Allen
Allen Chastanet is a thorn in Rufus’s side; the latter will do anything to cut Allen down. You should have heard him ranting on News Spin recently. Flip flopping all over the place in the name of the people of Choiseul and by extension, St Lucia. Give me a break!
Rufus, whether it is true or not it is alleged to have been known for a lot of unpleasant things; even more so during the 2006 general elections campaign. He is alleged to have gone under numerous names and those concerned during the campaign were wondering under which name he would register as a candidate. He is also alleged to have served  time in the USA. The last controversial inquiry into the use of Taiwanesse funds implicated him in dubious transactions. The Moroccan funds which he claimed he secured for the construction of a mini stadium for the La Fargue Playing Field never met its intended purpose.  News just coming to hand as I write this piece makes mention to him saying that the Moroccan funds were his personal funds. Phew! Bruce Tucker, as he is sometimes called, is at odds with caterers, agents and persons who carried out small contracts over monies due to them for works done. They claim he is a bad paymaster. And last but not least, it is alleged that he has been known to pay/update delegates dues and even marginalize the registered members to secure votes to support him at a convention,( Annison Hunte, in a statement to RCI confirmed this). He is well known to by any means necessary to secure ends which he sets his eyes on - just like he did Sunday past. The nature of the man!
And now, making the rounds, is the talk that Rufus is about to hijack the UWP Choiseul Branch in a move it is alleged, to secure a seat on the National Council – God know why.
I was informed of this move in Vieux Fort by hopeful for the Choiseul seat this coming elections. He reiterated that his chances of being considered must be slim now if Rufus wins the chairmanship. According to the UWP Constitution on membership, persons applying to be members of the party must undergo a waiting period of between 7 to 14 days. The deadline for application for membership so that one could vote at the July 5, 2015 Branch Elections was June 30, 2015.
Silvanus Fontenard
News of the outcome of this infamous meeting was posted online by a well-known co-founder/updater of the UWP Constitution, Silvanus Fontenard himself. His post reads, “Just a few weeks ago Bruce tucker described UWP as a group of mongrels but he is trying to worm his way in by conspiring with reds and other dirty tricksters to get rid of Allen Chastanet. The plan has been to secure the chairmanship of the Choiseul Branch thus gaining a national council vote to commence his dirty work. Just imagine people who applied to join the branch this week were allowed to pay their registration fees today and allowed to vote in order to get their friends into the executive to facilitate their dirty work. What shocked me though is that Nancy Charles enabled the process with the excuse that we should open the party to all persons who are interested. Clearly, this was a violation of the party’s Constitution. The question though is where these people were over the past 18 years since the reorganization of the UWP. Did they suddenly realize they wanted to be members today? So my warning Unitedpac St Lucia, Allen Chastanet and Ezekiel Joseph, be aware of Nancy - her actions suggests that she is part of the conspiracy to get you guys out. If you must know also, some members of the branch executive also helped to facilitate the process. So Unitedpac St Lucia, watch out and be prepared. The ex con and his criminal strategist are coming your way.”
Nancy Charles
There was something different at that meeting - there was tension, a sudden quietness, a lack of eye contacts between the instigators of the plan and honest members, a set of persons who in the past showed loyalty to Rufus, and nominations for positions started from the bottom instead of the top position. - you could just smell something was not right.
A few persons who became members at that meeting were elected on the new executive – a well calculated move by Rufus, and his henchmen led by Peter “Reds” Philip. What is even more interesting is the Chairman has held on to this position jealousy from times immemorial. Last branch elections he deliberately did not let his position be challenged. However this time around he is stepping down and one of the henchmen nominated him to be vice chairman – a calculated move to make room for Rufus as Chairman. But many persons are unaware of what is to come. The floor was opened for nomination for the position of Chairman and in a flash Rufus was nominated and seconded almost immediately. A move to close nominations was blocked by an intelligent person who also quickly nominated Brian Charles – that foiled Rufus’s plan. Brian Charles was seconded by members on the other side.  You could see the disappointment on the faces of Rufus’ gang. The run-off is due for July 26, 2015 – BRIAN vs RUFUS.
The new executive reads:
Chairman:                      Brian Charles and Rufus Bousquet (to be decided on 26/7/2015)
Vice Chairman:               Mr Gilbert Isaac
Mobilization Officer:       Martinus Thomas
Welfare Officer:              Peter Philip
Women's Affair:               Melanie Mitchel
Youth Officer:                 Kina Nicholas
Public Relations Officer: Christopher Gustave
Treasurer:                       Ignatius Jean
Secretary:                       Lima Jornacien
So what’s on Rufus’ mind as he makes his attempt to become the Chairman of the Branch Executive?  If he becomes Chairman he will automatically gain a seat on the National Council. Your guess is as good as mine as to what he intends to do. A man who has never had respect for the  Executive during his two tenures as Parliamentary Rep. Only when he found himself in opposition and he needed to achieve some political move he would think of them. One will recall that Choiseul on the Move predicted this move in a post, dated Monday 22, September, 2014 under the heading “UWP Choiseul Branch Exec Still in Rufus’ Back Pocket?” Here it is, in your face!

Claudius Preville
In his last radio interview on “News Spin” when asked to make his final comments, among other things he said, that St Lucians have to aware of persons who have ulterior motives who offer themselves to represent them. Omg, it’s such a pity he cannot see himself in this statement.
Rufus must stop using his stooges on the Branch Executive to achieve his political ends.  He did it at Saltibus, when he used Peter “Reds’ Philip to nominate Preville for the leadership of the Party, and here he is at it again. The fools refuse to learn.

Nothing To Smile About?

Good and competent representation is something that seems to elude the constituency of Choiseul/Saltibus. Persons in the generation before mine say that JMD Bousquet was about the best Parliamentary Rep this Constituency has had.......so they say. Others argue Gilbert Mason was tops.
My generation and up, to my mind have been disgruntled with what passes for good representation in Choiseul/Saltibus. From Brian to Lorne, do you see anything to smile about? Driving through the Choiseul Village, do you see anything to smile about? Walking through the Forgotten Communities do you see anything to smile about? Taking a look at the present state of unemployment among our youths in the district, do you see anything to smile about? The parents who cannot afford to send their children to school is this anything to smile about? No, No, No, nada to smile about.

Roblot Multi-Purpose Centre ( Nothing to shout about)
Will our Rep ever make his constituents smile? Smiles have disappeared on the faces of the youth, the elderly the small contractors, the farmers, the fishers, the housewives, the children, the shut-ins and the whole lot in  The Forgotten Communities. So, is there hope? Recently, in fact just this week, a reliable source informed this blog that the estimates for the renovation of the Roblot Multi-purpose Centre has been completed and that tenders for the work will be out about July-August. The source also mentioned that some potholing of the roads is down to be done.....no time frame given.
Although I trust my source, I took this news with a grain of salt.....the source herself mentioned keeping her fingers crossed as well.
The reason for this blog's uncertainty as to whether this project will ever get off the ground, is based on similar promises being made about the commencement of the project before......one by the Rep himself at the opening of the Bois D'orange Bridge, where he and me had a one on one chat, and one by the source herself when in August last year she mentioned that part of the Constituency Development Fund would go towards the Centre. I dismissed this based on my little knowledge on evaluation. Not even the CDF would be sufficient to complete this project....so this was a blank shot.
Immediately upon getting the news from my source I posted the news on Facebook. One well known political activist tin the district commented, "Elections coming, boy." Another from One of the forgotten communities wrote, “It’s high time something needed to be done in the forgotten community. Our roads for sure need some major repair. Hope to the Almighty something be done soonest.” Surely she has nothing to smile about.
We in the Forgotten Communities look forward to the day when we can have somrthing to smile about. Until then……………….

Does the Rep have anything to smile about? May be. He may just smile at this article and the blue sky above in the pic above.

New season of Game of Drones Opens

Governor General
The Governor General opened of the fifth series of the 10th season of Saint Lucia's best watched comedy show yesterday April 27, 2015. The series is hoping to bring in a whooping total of $1,464,236,000.00.
There will be five shows in this series. The first and second show will be aired on  Wednesday, April 29 and Thursday, April 30 at 9 a.m. During these two shows, the characters will debate the Estimates of Expenditure for the financial year 2015/2016. A report on the Meeting of the Standing Finance Committee will also be presented.
The motion is as follows: be it resolved that the House of Assembly(Game of Thrones) do adopt the Report of the Standing Finance Committee on the Estimates of Expenditure for the financial year 2015/2016 in the sum of one billion, four hundred and sixty-four million, two hundred and thirty-six thousand dollars ($1,464,236,000) as a charge against the Consolidated Fund and other funds of the State of Saint Lucia.
Setting for Game of Drones
The third and significant show  is down for a formal House of Assembly(Game of Thrones) meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12 at 4 p.m. for the tabling of the Appropriation Bill 2015/2016 and the delivery of the Director's ( Prime Minister) budget speech.
By all accounts, reports reveal that St Lucians both here and abroad will gravitate to their TV screens to watch the last two shows which are slated for Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15. The shows are expected to commence at 9 a.m. on each day.
Game of Drones actor, Lorney Boy.
Fans from  the Choiseul/Saltibus Community will no doubt take great interest in the last two shows. Of interest to them in particular, is the character "Lorney Boy" whom they have put all their energies into to see him  have a role on this show. This is "Lorney Boy's" 4th season and the fans who are disappointed with his role in the show thus far, are looking forward for something NEW. He has let down his fans miserably over the past three seasons - he has refused to read from the script that has been so painfully prepared for him.
Firing him is on the cards, especially from a cliche, "The Forgotten Communities." Whether he can read  this present script  to the satisfaction of his fans is left to be seen. But the cards have already been played.
As for the other characters in the show, this season will prove to be one of the most riveting roles depicting bluff, lies, half truths, innuendos, character assassinations, flashing mirrors and you name it.
I am sure that it will be more entertainment for St Lucians and by extension the world to serve this acts of comedy as a dessert after the just concluded Jazz & Arts Festival,

Another One Bites The Dust?

Sam "Jouk Bois" Flood, like him or not, is doing to the "malaway" what George Odlum did for St Lucians - Sam brings Looshans up to speed on the corruption and other runnings in government while George opened our eyes politically. Sam's patois program aired weekly, Monday to Saturday from 4:55am - 7:00am and  Tuesdays and Thurdays from 6:00pm - 8:00pm, is well listened to throughout the island and by extension through the world wide web, worldwide. The program is aired on 96.1 and 105.3 in the frequency modulation frequency and on the internet at http://www.caribbeanhotfm.com
But can you believe that as I write this piece Hot Fm is not streaming the program over the net. Many overseas persons have reported this situation to Sam that it appears his morning program is being boycotted over the net for sometime now. Is this a deliberate act of sabotage to keep Looshans overseas in the dark on Jouk Bois' interpretation of what is happening locally? Will the powers that be try to shut him up as well? That will be the day in St Lucia!
It has recently troubled me that just before Sam ends his program, there is that clip which comes on to indicate that Sam is completely responsible for his content. Hmm! Was management threatened? many have gone after this program and Sam to shut him up, but he rises above them all.
This piece is not about Jouk Bois. It is about an alleged plagiarism which was  committed by a Minister of government in his venture to add a degree before his name. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author's work as one's own, as by not crediting the original author. Sam "Jouk Bois" Flood broke the story this morning in his usual grandeur style. In his usual "Cyrstal" language style he reminded his listeners of the time he broke the story on "Walter Riley" after he went up to Canada to find out the truth behind the "Dr" which he [Walter Riley] displayed behind his name. Two days later Riley sent in his resignation to the PM.
Now,It is alleged that another Minister presented the work of a lady from the Choiseul area to the university to obtain a degree. The thesis  he said speaks to the "development of the Hewannora Airport." Sam went on to inform the nation that this Minister is the only one who "stands up" to the PM - the others are "boys" at the foot of the Kenny. If found culpable, what will be the PM's wrath Sam seems to imply?
Sam did not have it completely right. My investigation into this allegation revealed that  there may have been plagiarism involved. The title of the original thesis is: THE VIABILITY OF OPERATION TWO AIRPORTS IN ST LUCIA. The Minister may have copied parts of the work of another author and presented it as his own without acknowledging the author or even getting permission to do so. He the Minister may have gotten hold of this paper at a Government Office where he worked at the time. My investigations further revealed that the thesis he wrote was not for a Phd but actually for his Masters.  And he did not sit in the same university with the author. This all happened quite a while back.
If found in the wrong what actions could be taken? Will the PM fire him?  Or will the author sue him? Will he get off the hook Scott-free? Or will he resign?
According to this site http://www.checkforplagiarism.net/plagiarism-law "Colleges, universities and professional entities certainly have the authority to punish plagiarists in various ways, including expulsion from the college or revoking a degree earned in part by plagiarism. But plagiarism is also a legal issue.

Copyright Law

Plagiarism and Copyright Law 2012The owner of the copyright (i.e., in most cases, the true author) could sue the plagiarist in federal court for violation of the copyright. Any work created in the USA after 1st. Mar 1989 is automatically protected by copyright, even if there is no copyright notice attached to the work. 17 USC, Sub-Section 102, 401, and 405.
It is important to note that the addition of original material by the plagiarist in no way excuses the act of plagiarism. The focus is on what the plagiarist did wrong, not what the plagiarist did right. Trivial changes in copied text, in an attempt to avoid copyright infringement, are specifically prohibited by law in the USA." The point is was the original paper presented in a US university? Hmmm!
To get a a clearer picture of this matter I tried to contact the alleged author who replied, " No comments. Not interested."

Just What Will It Take, Mr Rep?

Our Parliamentry Rep
Am I impressed with the Rep's representation so far? His surrogates may call me biased, but it is a resounding NO. More about my disappointments later.
The Hon Lorne Theophilus began his 2014 Christmas Message with this paragraph - "I can hardly believe that another has gone by and that this is the fourth time that I have had the honor of addressing you in my capacity as Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul and Saltibus and the Minister for Tourism Heritage and Creative Industries."
He continued, "The Christmas Season for me means many things. It is a time for introspection and at times solemn reflection on the past year, and with it the various triumphs and attendant challenges."
Weh mesieur! "........time for introspection and solemn reflection..... [on my representation?]"  Words in [ ] my own. You bet; he had to do some self examination of his mental and emotional state to come to grips with reality. And yes, he could also not believe that this is the fourth  time he has addressed his constituents. Oh how time flies for the non-caring! And solemn reflection? His solemness reflection on the past year, to me, speaks loudly to his failure to connect meaningfully and continuously with most of the communities within his constituency.

A Lorne  Project
"I feel comforted that despite the odds I managed with the help of my family, and committed staff at my ministries and loyal constituents to meet most of my objectives this year."  He boasts of. Is that a means of comfort for the Rep? What were these objectives? - the Fiette road, the Balca drainage, the footpath at Esperance, the surrogates giving work only to the "en rouges", a Constituency Council that can barely function on the little stipend they receive quarterly? For real! One of the objectives our Rep did achieve is his non presence in numerous communities - the Forgotten Communities of Roblot, Lamaze, Debreuil and Rivere Doree stand out in this regard. And my God,recently at a convention that was held in Choiseul, to hear Pierre and Dalson cry to the public,to overlook Lorne's poor visitation record in the Constituency.
However bravo Mr Rep, for the little you have achieved so far. The people can do with it.
Roblot Multi-purpose Centre
In the same breath, I must be, and continue be on the Rep's back to remind him of his promise (wasn't that an objective?) to the Roblot and Piaye constituents for a Multi-purpose Center this financial year. I got some reliable information that the construction of the centers are in the pipeline. This was also confirmed to me by the Rep himself, when I met him at the opening ceremony of the Bois D'Orange Bridge. "What are you doing here?" He asked. Just covering the ceremony, I replied. "This guy keeps on giving me endless sticks on the net." He side-talked to a female friend of mine. I simply laughed it off. To be quite frank, there was no malice or ill-feeling, it was all done in a friendly atmosphere. My problem with this promise, is will it be fulfilled.
STEP - garbage
I have issues with the continued preferences exhibited in the STEP and the different roadworks packages managed by the Rep's Constituency Office. There must be more transparency. One may be quick to criticize the former administration, but two wrongs don't make a right. We must learn to move away from such pettiness. The glaring display of one household member repeatedly having more than one job in anyone package is beyond reason. The constant recycling of the same workers is heart wrenching. The polling division I-5 speaks to this in no uncertain terms....it may very well be a directive from the Rep's local office. I stand corrected.
This may very well be the Lorne's last Christmas message before elections. It is very likely that after a great budget speech by the PM, come April/May, one may hear of a general election. Has Lorne done enough to stand another chance? Has he given his constituents the quality representation that he promised back in 2011? Most of his supporters will answer in the positive and conversely by those on the other side of the divide. But be warned, this election result rests in the hands of the youth and to a certain extent - the women of this nation.
Rep and allegged Challenger
In my opinion, Lorne needs to get into "representation mode". The whole idea of him posting stuff on his Facebook page showcasing his projects is not enough. There are many issues which need his attention. On the other hand the opposition in the Constituency, to me, is a ship with no rudder. They are a lost case. So what is the alternative? Time will tell.
It is however interesting to read what the Rep said as he did some "introspection and solemn reflection," in his Christmas message. "I look forward to the days that I will spend with my constituents, family and friends and hope that I can bring nothing but cheer and good will during these times and our interactions in the future."
"Choiseul on the Move", and many communities look forward to that day.

GOD SPEED.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE: HON LORNE THEOPHILUS

I can hardly believe that another has gone by and that this is the fourth time that I have had the honor of addressing you in my capacity as Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul and Saltibus and the Minister for Tourism Heritage and Creative Industries
The Christmas Season for me means many things
It is a time for introspection and at times solemn reflection on the past year, and with it the various triumphs and attendant challenges. I feel comforted that despite the odds I managed with the help of my family, and committed staff at my ministries and loyal constituents to meet most of my objectives this year.
Christmas is also a time when we reconnect with family, and loved ones, mend wounds of the past and cultivate a positive outlook for the coming year. It is also a time when we revitalize our spirituality as we ponder on the birth of our Lord and Saviour for his sacrifices for each of us.
I look forward to the days that I will spend with my constituents, family and friends and hope that I can bring nothing but cheer and good will during these times and our interactions in the future. Whilst we celebrate this season, let us also take time to remember those who lost their lives during 2014, those who are sick, and those who may be less fortunate than ourselves.
I extend the warmest Christmas greetings to our Hon. Prime Minister and my Cabinet colleagues, to the entire community of Choiseul and Saltibus and to my staff at the Ministry of Tourism, Heritage & Creative Industries, the Saint Lucia Tourist Board, The Cultural Development Foundation and the Folk Research Center
I wish to thank you at this time for your motivation, support, and at times tolerance in dealing with me as I pursue this public mandate.
Merry Christmas and a Happy 2015!

The St Lucia Labour Party is deluded... brace for drawbacks - By Melanius Alphonse

The last three years of Labour has been hell on earth. But, with two more years to go, and the proposition for early election, the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) brand will fade away.
That would be a welcome sign on the heels of an establishment that not only continues to lose purpose, but lacks credibility. For those who bothered to listen and watch last Sunday's conference of delegates, the reviews conclude that it was a successfully performance of Hollywood proportions.
In much delight, the staged performances were effortless; in much the same manner that Labour's brand of politics delivers countless pain and suffering on the people of Saint Lucia.
The message, if any, reaffirmed the establishment solidarity with constitutional abuse and excesses of autocratic leaders, and a ruling [SLP] party that's in a state of indisposed denial, finds it necessary to reassure delegates that "We came from different stock. The Saint Lucia Labour Party came from the struggles of our workers against the plantocracy and colonialism." ~ Kenny Anthony
There must be something in the air, to merit that retort. Similar, there may be reasons to conjure, as Labour is stretched out, in full self adulation in the thought process that most Saint Lucians are dancing and drinking SLP Kool Aid.
Delusional as this is for Kenny Anthony and the SLP that's the feeling of disconnection with people, business and community that is not coincidental.
Let's break this down!
Last Sunday, Kenny Anthony and the SLP attempted to come across with some revisionist history, a fake sense of compassion and a subdued social conscience. Maybe it had something to do with indifference. But first, bear with me to focus your attention to a few excerpts from Kenny Anthony's address and offer some observations. Because, repeatedly, what was dramatized is not what the people of Saint Lucia are receiving, beginning with this:
"Sometimes we are hard on ourselves, so taken in by the criticisms of our detractors that we fail to recognize our accomplishments. We are in danger of becoming apologists for our success!"~ Kenny Anthony
This is not the first attempt to bend reality or to distract society. But truly, this has to be a worrisome sign, with the responsible of finance and the governance of Saint Lucia, to actually bask in the stratosphere of nothingness. This is really dehumanizing. And to even claim that:
"We were different then, we are different now and we dare to be different tomorrow," is impractical to the quote that, "Labour is truly a government which does not discriminate."~ Kenny Anthony
Really! This is side-splitting in a self-serving endeavour. However, those who know otherwise concur that the personalization of politics, vendetta politics and the scorched earth policy of partisan warfare that currently exist -- fairness, equity and a brighter tomorrow are buried with SLP's ideology.
The underlying factor in Saint Lucia today is the underperformance of every sector of governance and the economy. This is fueled by low value ideas of contain and control methods that are a staple of SLP substandard ideology. Meanwhile, the country is mired in bread-and-butter issues and unfulfilled job creation in plain view for all to see.
However, the bad news is being propagated into a fallacy that reads:"Negative growth has now decelerated and I believe that we will see a return to positive growth next financial year. We have bottomed out. Little green shoots of growth have begun to appear. On the fiscal side, our deficit has not worsened but the delay in arriving at an agreement with the public sector unions has not given us the benefit of the adjustment we needed. We have a lot going for us. Sometimes we have to take two steps backwards to take a giant leap forward."~ Kenny Anthony
There are two phrases that come to mind. One that says "Ignorance is bliss" and the other "Knowledge is power", and with that power opens more opportunities for those who are able to make rational and intelligent decisions. I will leave it at that for the time being.
The fact is that there are plenty of opportunities that suggest the unwillingness of government to use its marginal political mandate in a collaborative manner to tap creativity and innovation to propel Saint Lucia's economy. However, these opportunities go unfulfilled due to a one dimensional scrutiny. But you won't know this having read the following:
"We believe in creating and building a society that is just and inclusive. As I said in my maiden acceptance speech to you in Laborie in 1996, we seek 'to build consensus at all levels of decision-making and to accept that we are morally responsible and accountable to the people of Saint Lucia as a whole.'"~ Kenny Anthony.
Naturally, collaboration brings people together, working together towards personal and institutional goals and the country as a whole for a successful end product. And the culture that surrounds such depicts how business is conducted, how ideas are transformed, how problems are solved and the creativity that blooms to drive innovation. So when government's best ideas have not come across as purposeful, capturing the innovation of people, this surely indicates a lack of optimism in the future with SLP on the frontlines.
The bad news is that Kenny Anthony and the SLP are roughly at their best when receiving Taiwanese money, which was classified as "dirty money" while in purgatory, and now with the distinction of implementing and collecting the 15% VAT, once described as "oppressive, anti-poor and anti-worker", is now a smart policy to raise revenue in a dead beat economy.
In a big way Kenny Anthony feels content to announce that the ALBA Bank has agreed to provide grant financing to the government of Saint Lucia to finance NICE to the tune of US$10 million over two years, that is just under EC$27 million; and overnight flip flops, as meaningful investments turned away.
Whatever you think about the ALBA Bank, nothing was declare on the fiscal chaos in Venezuelan and that the government seems to be running out of hard currency in the face of depressed oil prices, rampant inflation, shortages of consumer goods and worsening crime. Last Friday, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro said, "I have ordered a revision of salaries of ministers and state enterprises, starting with the president of the republic." Adding that a commission will be established, he stated, "This commission is going to take an axe and chop wherever we need to," and that "budget cuts were needed."
PetroCaribe and ALBA are feeling the heat. They are hanging on a shoestring as well as their foreign policy influence in the region. Four CARICOM countries Belize, Haiti, Jamaica and Guyana are taking steps to reduce their dependency on PetroCaribe. Meanwhile Saint Lucia's PetroCaribe and ALBA transaction(s) are a national secret of the SLP socialist elite.
At the same time, Russia, which by all accounts is trying to extend it borders into the Caribbean, is hurting, with a wounded economy that could fall into crisis. The wisdom of its Ukraine policy is under tremendous attack worldwide. Depressed oil prices have compounded the situation, and consequently the rouble is taking a hit, along with $1.9 trillion in debt coming due, of which $35 billion of debt repayments are due in December alone.
Closer to home in Trinidad and Tobago, Finance Minister Larry Howai has cautioned that some belt tightening will have to be undertaken and that there is no room for complacency as the ministry of finance continues to monitor the global environment and to refine remedial fiscal measures [including budget reviews] to changes in the market for oil and gas.
Conveniently, while in purgatory, Kenny Anthony and the SLP made an issue of high oil prices and the retail price of petroleum products on the island, and referenced the term "extortion". Today, world market prices are the lowest in five years and the SLP is in government, yet the retail prices for petroleum products in Saint Lucia remain unexplained.
I now put the question: is this extortion, hypocrisy or both?
But as usual, Kenny Anthony and the SLP choose to ignore such matters, and issues that affect the daily lives of the people of the country, but for political platitudes and self adulation fit for kings and emperors, except in this case the pretend kings and emperors are displeasing to the eye, serving merely as puppets, to the south-south bloc of nations.
What might those reasons be for Saint Lucia, while the risks of getting worse are filled with political dogma?
For various reasons, these are serious causes for concern that not only hinder collaboration and innovation for the development of the country, but are a far cry from the issues of development, governance and accountability, pursuing policies and systemic changes that are need to pull-up struggling people and the country from tough economic times.
The party clearly has a motto: "bread, justice, and freedom for all." But getting a fair share is a huge undertaking that very few people can afford. In essence, the article of faith and creed reads:
"The Saint Lucia Labour Party continues to champion a more equitable society in which poverty has been eliminated. We champion a society in which there is no 'yawning gap' between the rich and the poor, or as Peter Phillips, the current Jamaican finance minister once told us, 'no yawning gap between those who have too much and those who do not have enough to survive.' We believe that a society is best constructed on the pillars of social peace, solidarity and stability."
It continued:"We believe in participatory democracy. We reject the notion that democracy is for one class of persons, that some are better endowed than others, to manage authority and power."~ Kenny Anthony.
Reading this I felt besieged, knowing the realism to what is subscribed, and that minimum government, maximum governance has been a flip of the tongue and can't walk the talk, as the performance of most ministers leaves much to be desired and that the function and role of government has gotten messy with each passing day, as there is no clear cut counter-balance that is recognized about who's actually responsible for what.
Despite the explanation that "we are different" [meaning the SLP], as expressed by Kenny Anthony, the paradox is unchanged – Saint Lucia is at risk, at the hands of a self-serving small group of the [Socialist] plantocracy, who think if not them, then who else to govern the country.
There is no shortage of this action. The continuous exhibition of political theatre on every opportunity is alarming. Last Sunday was no exception!
Repeatedly, political theatre has taken precedence over finding solutions to gripping problems, and has proven repeatedly that the current political culture is incapable of creating a culture of cooperation to harvest diverse viewpoints and to reap the benefits of creative disagreements.
Is this a price worth paying? Is this brand of politics and economic mythology that is certain to breed anger, frustration and despair worthy of two more years in government? Or would an embrace of a collaborative mindset create a culture in which relationships are formed and results are derived?
Perhaps with perseverance there is hope on the horizon, as illustrated in the most recent case involving 23 Coubaril residents and the Development Control Authority (DCA) whereby residents of Coubaril expressed their disapproval of a change of use of lands at Auralie Drive, Coubaril, in Castries from residential to commercial to facilitate the relocation of the offices of the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) and the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) is an interesting demonstration of collaboration, democracy and the rule of law.
Perhaps the abuse of power that values symbolism over substance that public officials are exhibiting with some misguided employees will be placed in context to what the law says, rather than ambiguous deals that do not serve the public good in closing the gap between the haves and the have nots.
But now that the building and surrounding land at Coubaril will be restored, hopefully the community will return to its accustomed sense of tranquility that all can continue to enjoy. And to welcome new residents, including ministers of government who would someday call Coubaril home.
The other matter of similarity on the radar is that of the residents of Trouya Pointe raising objection to a proposal to change the land use of properties in their community from single family residential to multi-family villas and a hotel with spa and restaurant.
Emma Hippolyte, the area district representative, has indicated that she had no knowledge of the proposal beyond what has been reported in the media and vows to support the residents in their effort to stop this proposal.
But since the right hand knows not what the left hand is doing, the address to delegates lends clarity. It reads:
"We must care for all of our children, the inheritors of our future… we reaffirm that we are the guardians of our environment. This declaration is not new. That, too, I announced in my maiden address to you in Laborie in 1996. We declared our commitment to be protectors of our patrimony long before it became vogue for other political parties in our region to do so."~ Kenny Anthony.
Clearly, Labour is in the midst of paralysis, and as such is blaming somebody else but themselves for their bad policies that are not working. Their approach has no honest choices. It is hidden with discrimination and gridlock and a messy reality in a system of distraction and extortion. One that is propagated by ideological platitudes, in a system, that won't put money by way of employment into the wallets of the people of Saint Lucia.
Hopefully, soon from now, finding solutions will be possible, working together to improving globally competitiveness and compatibility with global standards. But, to achieve this, the utilization of resources is necessary to restore the middle and working class agenda with a coherent, comprehensive strategy of collaboration to transform policy for future results.
Most importantly, such will be carried out in an inclusive manner and not imposed, or to feel that without the party of substance, SLP, then who else? After all, the essence of governance is to represent and engage the people and not marshal them adversely.
Otherwise everyone will be farther out at sea, and still wondering. What went wrong? Buckle your seat belts Saint Lucia!
