THE FORGOTTEN COMMUNITIES (I5) ARE THE KEY IN DECIDING THE CHOISEUL/SALTIBUS SEAT? MYTH OR FACT?

"The Forgotten Communities have the power in their hands. Did they ever think that they would be so powerful?"

The Roblot Combined School Polling Station labelled I5 for election purposes is where voters from Montete, Mondesir Roblot, Dupre, La Maze, River Doree, Debreuil, and Monzie (The Forgotten Communities cast their votes. There has been much speculation in the past and most recently about the role these voters can  play in the upcoming elections in deciding which candidate wins the Choiseul/Saltibus seat. Recently two good friends of mine brought up the issue. –“You know the Roblot box is a decider in the election for the Choiseul/Saltibus seat?” They both asked.” Hmmm!” I replied. “I have heard of this, but is there any proof to substantiate this.” I continued.

Here is what a little research showed. Digging in St Lucia’s past election results did not come up with figures for the polling station I5, but through discussions with a wide cross-section of elders as well politically savvy persons in the various communities, surely gave me something to ponder on. The elections in 1997, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 20016 have clearly shown this theory to hold water.

Here is a summary:- 1992 - 2016

  1. Rufus beat Calderon in Robot and ended the latter’s reign in Choiseul/Saltibus in 1992
  2. Fergy beat Rufus in Roblot in 1997 and 2001 and became the Rep
  3. Lorne beat Rufus in the Roblot box and became the Rep in 2006
  4. Rufus won the polling station in 2011 and became the Rep and
  5. Bradley replacing Rufus in 2016 handsomely won the polling station and became the 2nd youngest parliamentarian for Choiseul/Saltibus.

Similar stories were given about the Calderon/Bryan era but they were not conclusive since persons could not positively confirm the winners in that polling dicision during the 1979 – 1992 when Bryan, Calderon Mason and Satney were candidates during that period

In 1982 Gregor Mason and Gilroy Satney and Bryan Charles ran on SLP, PLP, and UWP tickets respectively. Calderon won the 1979 and 1987 elections.

In drawing a conclusion I believe it is fair to say that there might be truth behind this theory.

There are also a few persons who believe that Bryan may not have lost the Roblot polling station but still went on to be the district rep while Calderon did in fact win it.

So I leave the final conclusion in your hands.

DO YOU THINK THAT THE CANDIDATE WHO WINS THE ROBLOT POLLING STATION WINS THE CHOISEUL/SALTIBUS SEAT?

KENNY IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE 21ST CENTURY POLITICS - FEDEE

In a revealing statement the Minister for Tourism, Fedee, said that Kenny's old time politics cant keep up with the times - he bluntly put it, "Kenny has passed his time."

"He's [Kenny] been in politics a very long time. He talks about being in politics since 1978. I mean that's a long time, that's 40 years ago. And so, therefore, someone who's politics was learnt in this era  cannot be in touch with what is neccessary in the 21st century. So he's clearly an out of touch leader."

Fedee made reference to Kenny's 16-1 and 13 - 4 election victories which the latter could have used to effect change in St Lucia's political landscape.

SABINA DEBUNKS KENNY’S BLATANT UNTRUTHS!!!

The “Flambeau Forum” is definitely a program worth its salt - the moderator, Sabina Valmont ensures the high standard. Last Sunday’s program was particularly interesting and informative.

At the time of publishing the programme had already capped 440 likes, 1.3k comments and 15K views…..AMAZING.

Somewhere halfway in the program after a short break for a commercial Sabina Valamont unleashed a scathing attack on Kenny Anthony for the lies he spewed out at his party’s observation of the 5th anniversary of the SLP’s loss at the 2016 General Elections.

Sabina was composed and held back nothing as she gave it to Kenny refuting all of his Anniversary's allegations – calling them propaganda, blatant lies, selective amnesia, and repeatedly calling on Kenny with the “Have you forgotten?” phrase. The lady was explosive!

Below is a clip from the Flambeu Forum where Sabina is really on FIRE debunking Kennny’s lies.

It will be interesting to see if Kenny responds at all!!

NO CHICKEN AND RUM DURING COVID-19? RELATABLE MESSAGING IS KEY TO WINNING THE CHOISEUL/SALTIBUS SEAT!

A close race isn’t a phenomenon that’s unheard of in politics. In fact, there’s   documented instances of them. In over 270 races from around the world, an election could have gone either way based on a handful of votes.

As entertaining as that is to think about, for the Choiseul/Saltibus candidates in this election, it brings up the question: “How do I make sure the scales tip in my favor?”

No matter what either candidate thinks, the difference between winning and losing often comes down to the campaign strategy they employ.

The strategy for their campaign should be informed by the size of the electorate, the locality, public mindset, the timing, and methods of voter communication used.

In short, every election campaign needs a specific strategy that is influenced by the political climate it’s set in. And for the Choiseul/Saltibus constituency, winning supporters is largely about winning over the community of voters. You can take that to the bank.

Elections upon elections neither side seems to have presented a relatable message to capture their voters. The chicken and rum is the play of the day. Minds are changing, voters are getting smarter and need something more to entice them to go vote.

Two questions for the candidates: What does your campaign stand for? Do you stand for things your ideal voter cares about?

The message of the campaign should be all about letting voters find that common ground between candidates and voters, to get their support. A lot of that also has to do with how a candidate presents themselves.

Whatever is happening in each camp during this pandemic surely has not brought out the relevant messaging to the Choiseul community to get the voters out.

A campaign is all about creating the identity of the candidate. That includes the candidate’s background and past work, and what makes them ideal for the position they are running for.

The candidates’ messaging needs to show voters which issues and policies matter to them. Here they have to keep the voter’s perspective in mind. Bradly or Pauline will only be able to win if the campaign message reflects the needs of the electorate. Draw their attention and get their vote by showing them that their victory would improve their lives.

Their ideal campaign message should:

  • Address current problems
  • Be simple and clear
  • Be true and credible
  • And finally, answer the most important question on every voter’s mind:
What will voting for you do for me?

Anthia Lafeuille Retires - 41 Years of Shaping and Molding Minds!

By Vern Charles

Miss Anthia Lafueillee is an outstanding educator from the tranquil community of Le Riche, Choiseul. This amazing individual bid farewell to the system as she retired from the teaching service, on Wednesday 9th June, 2021, after having served for 41 years.

41 years of shaping and molding minds, impacting lives and homes and making a positive difference at her school with both staff and students. Twenty years of great leadership as a Principal and active member of the National Principals' Association. Many years serving as an active member of the St. Lucia Teachers' Union.

No doubt, coordinating the merger of the Infant and Primary Schools was quite a task in 2003. This she seamlessly did and under her reign, the Reunion Primary Roman Catholic School saw students continuing to excel in national exams and other endeavors. Reunion primary Yapp-athon-2017
Miss Lafeuillee was an exemplary Principal, from personality to decorum and always set the pace in fashion. Matching bags and shoes from conferences, to normal workdays, to sports day; it was a must. Hence why her farewell cake was a bag.

We say a hearty thank you to our dear Teacher Anthia for her indelible contribution to our nation, our community Choiseul and the Reunion Primary Roman Catholic School. The very
best wishes
on your new journey.

Happy Retirement.
